- Overview -
Ambaji Temple is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. It is dedicated to Goddess Amba (Ambaji), a form of Shakti (Divine Mother). The temple is located in Ambaji town, Banaskantha district, Gujarat, near the Gujarat-Rajasthan border.
It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the sacred places associated with Goddess Sati.
- Historical Significance -
According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Shiva carried the body of Goddess Sati after her self-immolation, parts of her body fell at different locations across the Indian subcontinent. Ambaji is believed to be the place where Sati's heart fell, making it a revered Shakti Peetha.
- Unique Feature -
Unlike most Hindu temples, the Ambaji Temple does not contain a traditional idol of the goddess. Instead, devotees worship a sacred symbol called the Shree Visa Yantra, which is engraved on a marble structure inside the sanctum. The yantra is usually covered and cannot be photographed.
