Beach Hours and Swimming

The beach itself is generally open from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Swimming is normally allowed only during the official beach season, when lifeguards are present from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Important for 2026: Chicago's 2026 swimming season ended on September 7, 2026, so swimming is currently prohibited until the 2027 beach season.

There are pay-and-display parking lots and street parking near the beach. CTA bus routes serving the area include 78 Montrose, 81 Lawrence, and 151 Sheridan, with the Lawrence and Wilson Red Line stations nearby.

Montrose Beach Dunes

The southern natural area of Montrose Beach contains a unique dune and panne habitat. It supports native plants and migratory birds and has become an important conservation area. Great Lakes piping plovers have also nested at Montrose Beach Dunes.
